Shopify Search & Discovery App Setup

Last Updated: 17 July 2026

Faceted filtering in BoltTheme integrates natively with the official Shopify Search & Discovery app. Setting up your filter rules inside the app automatically populates the filter options on collection pages and search results pages on your storefront.

️How to Configure

Follow these steps to install the app, set up your filter options, and enable them in the theme customizer:

Step 1: Install the Shopify Search & Discovery App

  1. Go to the Shopify App Store and search for Shopify Search & Discovery.
  2. Click Install to add the app to your Shopify Admin.
  3. Once installed, it will appear in your admin under Apps > Search & Discovery.

Step 2: Set Up Filters in Shopify Admin

Define which options (price, sizing, product type, etc.) should be available for your customers to filter by.

  1. Open the Search & Discovery app dashboard in your Shopify Admin.
  2. In the app’s left menu, click on Filters (under Faceted filters).
  3. Click the Add filter button in the top-right corner.
  4. Select the source for your filter. You can select standard attributes or custom variants:

Availability (In stock / Out of stock)
Price (Minimum / Maximum price sliders)
Product type
Vendor
Product options (e.g., Color, Size, Material)
Metafields (Custom values defined on your product entries)

  1. Drag and reorder the filters list to adjust their display order on the storefront.
  2. Click Save.

Step 3: Enable Filtering in BoltTheme Settings

Ensure collection pages and search pages are configured to display your custom filter choices.

  1. Navigate to your Shopify Theme Editor (Online Store > Themes > Customize).
  2. Go to any collection page (e.g. Default Collection template) or the search results page.
  3. Select the Catalog Main Grid (or Search Results Main) section settings on the left panel.
  4. Locate the Filtering and Sorting options:

– Check the Enable filtering box.
– (Optional) Toggle Collapse filters by default to start the accordions in an open/closed state.

  1. Click Save.

Step 4: Verify on the Storefront

  1. Navigate to your collection page on the storefront.
  2. Click the Filters toggle button next to the sorting drop-down.
  3. The faceted filters popup modal will slide open, displaying the exact options (e.g. Availability, Price) you configured in Step 2.

Important Best Practices

Dynamic Filtering Rules:
Filters are context-aware. An option (like Size or Color) will only display on a collection page if at least one product in that specific collection contains that variant or attribute. If a filter section is missing, double-check that your products in the current collection have those variant properties set.

Performance Optimized:
Faceted filtering in BoltTheme is fully integrated with Shopify’s native liquid architecture. It uses no heavy external Javascript libraries and does not make third-party database calls, ensuring collection filtering remains instant and does not affect your Core Web Vitals score.
