Shopify regularly releases backend updates, and we publish theme updates to add features and resolve bugs.
Update Options
1. Automatic Updates
- If you have not customized any theme code, you can update directly via the Themes page in your Shopify Admin.
- Look for an Update available notification next to the theme name, click on it, and follow the prompts.
2. Manual Updates
If you have edited your theme code:
- Create a Backup: Click Actions > Duplicate next to your active theme to create a backup copy.
- Download & Upload: Download the new theme zip version and upload it to your library.
- Transfer Settings: Manually copy your customizations and setting values to the new theme version.
- Publish: Preview the updated version to ensure everything works, then click Publish.
Updating your theme (either automatically or manually) will overwrite custom code files (e.g. customized .liquid or .css files). Keep backup copies of your custom code files.
